It was said that to be successful it is critical to see the important details of things up close, such as the technique of your opponent, as well as far away, such as the approach of a challenger. As your skill set increases, your strategy increases, and that expands your vision to see much more than you had before.
Jiu Jitsu traveled to Brazil in the 1900s where it was transformed into a competitive martial art and sport. Modern day Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is one of the fastest growing sports in the United States due to the increasing discussion in pop culture of the many benefits of BJJ on overall well-being.

Experienced professors and knowledgeable coaches focused on giving each student the skills and guidance they need on their Jiu Jitsu journey.

Professor Marcelo “Captain” Capociama is a third-degree black belt with the Checkmat team who grew up in Santos, Brazil. He received his nickname due to his old-school instruction room mentality and attention to detail in developing the curriculum. He is a highly-decorated competitor since coming to the U.S. in 2014, having won several national and international championships in both gi and no gi, experiences that he brings to the instruction room with warmth and passion.

Professor Joao Capociama is the son of Professor Marcelo who received his black belt from his father during a special ceremony in 2022. A phenom in his own right, Joao blends his father’s old-school style with innovative guard play and submissions. He too is highly competitive and has received many medals along his BJJ journey.

Coach Annie Capociama (previously Druckrey) has spent half of her life studying Jiu Jitsu in southern Orange County. A graduate of Mission Viejo high school, Jiu Jitsu is truly Annie's life passion. She has won in several championships in both gi and no gi and is listed as an Athlete of the Year for 2022 in JJWL. Annie is the heart of an extremely successful youth program. She teaches a blend of technique, passion, and grit which has resulted in over a dozen league champion students.

Coach Allan Aguilera is a brown belt that has been with the Checkmat team since he began his BJJ journey in 2015. Coach Allan is known for his hard exterior, and soft demeanor. He is joined at the academy by his wife and son in the junior's class. Allan is a monster in the gym and on the mats who enjoys strong guard play and pressure passes. His casual approach to instruction is perfect for morning class.

My Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu journey began 12 years ago at the age of 13, when I started training at an MMA gym that offered both gi and no-gi classes. After a year of consistent training, life pulled me in other directions, and I took a 10-year break from the sport. I reignited my passion for BJJ two and a half years ago and have been training at Vision ever since. In September 2024, I earned my blue belt under Professor’s Marcelo and Joao Capociama. Today, I am equally passionate about both training and teaching, and I’m dedicated to helping my teammates and students grow and improve on and off the mats.

I have been training for almost 8 years. I originally started training at 10 years old because my dad wanted me to learn self defense and I ended up loving it. I've competed throughout my years of training and I've learned so many life skills like discipline, how to deal with stress, and becoming mentally stronger. I also really enjoy coaching the kids and seeing them grow.
